Honey Market Size in ECOWAS
The ECOWAS honey market soared to $X in 2022, surging by 27% against the previous year. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS
In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of honey, when their volume decreased by -8.5% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 158% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, honey exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 142%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
Sierra Leone dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 98% of total exports in 2022. Mali (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
Exports from Sierra Leone increased at an average annual rate of +43.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mali (+68.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +68.5% from 2012-2022. Sierra Leone (+2.3 p.p.) and Mali (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X) remains the largest honey supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 100% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mali ($X), with a 0.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Sierra Leone stood at +44.2%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per ton), while Mali stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+0.8%).
Honey Imports
Imports in ECOWAS
In 2022, approx. X tons of honey were imported in ECOWAS; rising by 347% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 349% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, honey imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a significant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Nigeria (X tons) represented roughly 97% of total imports in 2022.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the honey imports, with a CAGR of +60.7% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Nigeria (+60 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported honey in ECOWAS.
In Nigeria, honey imports increased at an average annual rate of +48.4% over the period from 2012-2022.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -53.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year.
