In 2022, the average yield of horse, mule and donkey meat in ECOWAS declined to X kg per head, dropping by -2.2% against the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 4.9% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per head, and then declined in the following year.

The global number of animals slaughtered for horse, mule and donkey meat production expanded slightly to X heads in 2022, increasing by 2.5% on 2021. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the number of producing animals increased by 6.8% against the previous year. As a result, the amount of producing animals attained the peak level of X heads. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of this number remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X tons of horse, mule and donkey meat were exported in ECOWAS; leveling off at the year before. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 5,956,160% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat exports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 5,978,422%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -71.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 331% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Benin.

After four years of decline, supplies from abroad of horse, mule and donkey meat increased by 70% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 167%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat imports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 302% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) was the largest importer of horse, mule and donkey meat, achieving 61% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), creating a 39% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Ghana (with a CAGR of +41.3%).

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported horse, mule and donkey meat in ECOWAS, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with an 8.4% share of total imports.
