Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites exports in ECOWAS soared to X tons, rising by 33% on the year before. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Senegal prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), achieving a 9% share of total exports. The following exporters - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Mali (X tons) - together made up 5.1% of total exports.

Exports from Senegal decreased at an average annual rate of -6.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mali (+9.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +9.0% from 2012-2022. Nigeria and Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria and Mali increased by +3.8 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mali ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 4.7% share.

In Senegal, hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites exports decreased by an average annual rate of -4.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mali (+22.5% per year) and Nigeria (+2.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -2.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 13%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+12.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, purchases abroad of hypochlorites, commercial calcium hypochlorite, chlorites and hypobromites decreased by -26.1% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hypochlorites, chlorites and hypobromites imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Cabo Verde (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Gambia (X tons), Niger (X tons), Guinea-Bissau (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Benin (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Mali (X tons) represented roughly 98% of total imports in 2022.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Guinea-Bissau (with a CAGR of +20.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Nigeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 49% of total imports. Niger, Cabo Verde, Gambia, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Benin and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 47%.

Among the main importing countries, Guinea-Bissau, with a CAGR of +22.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 6.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 21%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per ton), while Guinea-Bissau ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
