Exports in ECOWAS
In 2021, the amount of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) exported in ECOWAS expanded sharply to X tons, growing by 7.8% against 2020 figures. Overall, exports recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 126% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, exports of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) contracted significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 85%. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Nigeria (X tons), Mali (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Niger (X tons), together resulting at 74% of total export. Ghana (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Togo (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 13% share of total exports. Burkina Faso (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +80.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest internal combustion engine (excl. diesel, moto vehicle and aircraft) supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with an 11% share.
In Nigeria, exports of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) increased at an average annual rate of +16.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+1.0% per year) and Ghana (+19.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, declining by -30% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 55%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS
In 2021, purchases abroad of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) decreased by -30.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 384% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, imports of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) dropped to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 661% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports of remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) was the largest importer of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft), making up 47% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Guinea (X tons), together comprising a 41% share of total imports. The following importers - Burkina Faso (X tons) and Togo (X tons) - together made up 5.3% of total imports.
Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of internal combustion engines, excluding diesel (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft). At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+22.7%), Guinea (+16.3%) and Ghana (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +22.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Senegal (-2.9%), Togo (-14.4%) and Burkina Faso (-25.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (+13 p.p.), Nigeria (+10 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+6.9 p.p.) and Guinea (+3.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Togo (-5.3 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (-31.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest internal combustion engine (excl. diesel, moto vehicle and aircraft) importing markets in ECOWAS were Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 71% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Togo, which together accounted for a further 11%.
Guinea, with a CAGR of +2.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 73% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
