Exports in ECOWAS
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of iron/steel stud-link chain, when their volume increased by 1,353% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports showed a significant expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, metal stud-link chain exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Senegal prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 92% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), committing a 7.5% share of total exports.
Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the iron/steel stud-link chain exports, with a CAGR of +63.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Senegal (+75 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -73.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) emerged as the largest metal stud-link chain supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.
In Senegal, metal stud-link chain exports expanded at an average annual rate of +56.3% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -74% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 298% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Senegal amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+1.0%).

Imports in ECOWAS
In 2021, purchases abroad of iron/steel stud-link chain decreased by -8.2% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, metal stud-link chain imports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 117%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Imports by Country
Nigeria represented the key importer of iron/steel stud-link chain in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 52% of total imports in 2021. Liberia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 23% share, followed by Ghana (10%), Senegal (4.9%) and Cote d'Ivoire (4.7%). Sierra Leone (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to metal stud-link chain imports into Nigeria stood at +7.0%. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+20.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (+13.4%), Ghana (+13.2%), Senegal (+8.5%) and Liberia (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sierra Leone emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +20.6% from 2012-2021. Ghana (+4.7 p.p.), Nigeria (+4.4 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Liberia saw its share reduced by -10.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported iron/steel stud-link chain in ECOWAS, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Liberia, with a 13% share.
In Nigeria, metal stud-link chain imports increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+11.4% per year) and Liberia (-1.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
