Market Size for Jams, Jellies, Puree And Pastes in ECOWAS

After two years of decline, the ECOWAS market for jams, jellies, puree and pastes increased by 4.2% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -5.8% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production of Jams, Jellies, Puree And Pastes in ECOWAS

In value terms, jam, jelly, puree and paste production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -7.6% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports of Jams, Jellies, Puree And Pastes

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, approx. X tons of jams, jellies, puree and pastes were exported in ECOWAS; shrinking by -34.5% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 193%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, jam, jelly, puree and paste exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 118% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Mali (X tons) was the key exporter of jams, jellies, puree and pastes, constituting 76% of total exports. Burkina Faso (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (4.9%). Sierra Leone (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Mali was also the fastest-growing in terms of the jams, jellies, puree and pastes exports, with a CAGR of +21.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+11.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Sierra Leone (-1.7%) and Burkina Faso (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mali (+44 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso saw its share reduced by -4.9% and -33.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mali ($X) remains the largest jam, jelly, puree and paste supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mali stood at +20.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+8.5% per year) and Burkina Faso (-4.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 18% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a slight slump. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Jams, Jellies, Puree And Pastes

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, the amount of jams, jellies, puree and pastes imported in ECOWAS soared to X tons, jumping by 36% compared with the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, jam, jelly, puree and paste imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +88.8% against 2017 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Senegal (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Sierra Leone (X tons) represented the largest importers of jams, jellies, puree and pastes, together committing 88% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Sierra Leone (with a CAGR of +33.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported jams, jellies, puree and pastes in ECOWAS, comprising 31% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 11% share.

In Senegal, jam, jelly, puree and paste imports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+6.0% per year) and Nigeria (-3.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 14% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
