Production of Jams, Marmalades, Fruit Jellies, Fruit Or Nut Purees And Pastes in ECOWAS
In value terms, fruit or nut preserves production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports in ECOWAS
In 2021, the amount of jams, marmalades, fruit jellies, fruit or nut purees and pastes exported in ECOWAS contracted modestly to X tons, which is down by -4.6% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 197% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fruit or nut preserves exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 122%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Mali dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 83% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), making up a 9.8% share of total exports. The following exporters - Senegal (X tons) and Sierra Leone (X tons) - each resulted at a 6.1% share of total exports.
Mali was also the fastest-growing in terms of the jams, marmalades, fruit jellies, fruit or nut purees and pastes exports, with a CAGR of +27.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+10.6%) and Sierra Leone (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mali (+51 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso saw its share reduced by -4.9% and -37.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mali ($X) remains the largest fruit or nut preserves supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mali amounted to +26.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (+8.4% per year) and Burkina Faso (-4.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, growing by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Jams, Marmalades, Fruit Jellies, Fruit Or Nut Purees And Pastes
Imports in ECOWAS
In 2021, overseas purchases of jams, marmalades, fruit jellies, fruit or nut purees and pastes increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after six years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, fruit or nut preserves imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Senegal (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) were the largest importers of jams, marmalades, fruit jellies, fruit or nut purees and pastes, together creating 81% of total imports. The following importers - Togo (X tons) and Liberia (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Liberia (with a CAGR of +18.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported jams, marmalades, fruit jellies, fruit or nut purees and pastes in ECOWAS, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 11% share.
In Senegal, fruit or nut preserves imports increased at an average annual rate of +13.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+5.6% per year) and Nigeria (-1.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 16% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
