Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, overseas shipments of laptops and palm-top computers decreased by -4.3% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 70%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, laptop and tablet computer exports declined remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Senegal (X units) represented the key exporter of laptops and palm-top computers, making up 68% of total exports. Ghana (X units) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (8.4%) and Cote d'Ivoire (6.7%). Sierra Leone (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to laptop and tablet computer exports from Senegal stood at +8.1%. At the same time, Ghana (+25.3%), Nigeria (+14.0%), Cote d'Ivoire (+13.8%) and Sierra Leone (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +25.3% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria and Cote d'Ivoire increased by +19, +11, +4.7 and +3.7 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest laptop and tablet computer supplying countries in ECOWAS were Nigeria ($X), Senegal ($X) and Ghana ($X), with a combined 79% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +22.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2021, waning by -30.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 41%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Senegal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Laptops and Palm-Top Computers

Imports in ECOWAS

Laptop and tablet computer imports skyrocketed to X units in 2021, with an increase of 26% on the year before. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +74.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, laptop and tablet computer imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Ghana was the key importer of laptops and palm-top computers in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was near 40% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Nigeria (X units), Senegal (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units), together making up a 46% share of total imports. Mali (X units) and Togo (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +12.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported laptops and palm-top computers in ECOWAS, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana stood at +10.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+16.4% per year) and Nigeria (-18.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per unit), while Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
