Lead Market Size in ECOWAS

For the fourth consecutive year, the ECOWAS lead market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -3.3% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a slight slump. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Lead Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, lead production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, exports of lead in ECOWAS soared to X tons, jumping by 18% on 2021 figures. Overall, exports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 167% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, lead exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 108%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) represented the major exporter of lead, comprising 81% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), comprising a 14% share of total exports. Senegal (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lead exports, with a CAGR of +14.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+5.6%) and Senegal (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria (+16 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Senegal and Ghana saw its share reduced by -3.3% and -10% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest lead supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria amounted to +6.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ghana (+6.2% per year) and Senegal (+4.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+0.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Lead Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, supplies from abroad of lead increased by 6.9% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lead imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 93%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Senegal represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 71% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), committing a 21% share of total imports.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lead imports, with a CAGR of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022. Nigeria (-20.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+52 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-43.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest lead importing markets in ECOWAS were Senegal ($X) and Nigeria ($X).

Senegal, with a CAGR of -5.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -17.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 56%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Senegal stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (-0.6%).
