Leek Market Size in ECOWAS

In 2022, the ECOWAS leek market decreased by -3.1% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the market value increased by 9.2%. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Leek Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, leek production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 24%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Niger (X tons) remains the largest leek producing country in ECOWAS, comprising approx. 78% of total volume. Moreover, leek production in Niger exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Benin (X tons), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Niger stood at +1.2%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Benin (+2.2% per year) and Senegal (+2.0% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in ECOWAS amounted to X tons per ha, remaining constant against the year before. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 4.7%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the leek yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the leek harvested area in ECOWAS fell slightly to X ha, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 11%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Leek Exports

Exports in ECOWAS

After five years of decline, overseas shipments of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables increased by 50% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 233%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, leek exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 227% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Senegal dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 82% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Mali (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Niger (X tons) - together made up 18% of total exports.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the leeks and other alliaceous vegetables exports, with a CAGR of +50.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mali (+37.2%), Nigeria (+28.2%), Ghana (+11.2%), Cote d'Ivoire (+11.1%) and Niger (+6.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+75 p.p.) and Mali (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Niger, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso saw its share reduced by -3.2%, -3.3%, -4.1% and -56.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest leek supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burkina Faso ($X), with a 4.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 4.1% share.

In Senegal, leek exports expanded at an average annual rate of +57.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burkina Faso (-12.0% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -19.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+7.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Leek Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, approx. X tons of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables were imported in ECOWAS; shrinking by -2.5% against 2021. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +117.4% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, leek imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a moderate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) were the largest importers of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in ECOWAS, together recording near 51% of total imports. Cabo Verde (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Niger (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Senegal (X tons). All these countries together took near 39% share of total imports. Liberia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +58.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest leek importing markets in ECOWAS were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Mali ($X) and Cabo Verde ($X), together comprising 70% of total imports. Senegal, Liberia, Niger and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +69.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 23%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
