From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +5.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average lemon and lime yield rose slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 2.8% on the year before. In general, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 9.8% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the lemon and lime yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the lemon and lime harvested area in ECOWAS contracted modestly to X ha, which is down by -2% compared with the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. In 2022, overseas shipments of lemons and limes decreased by -4.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 518% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lemon and lime exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 441% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Nigeria (X tons), distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) were the largest exporters of lemons and limes, together committing 92% of total exports. Guinea (X kg) and Togo (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +18.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Burkina Faso ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 85% of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +18.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 34% against the previous year. Export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, the amount of lemons and limes imported in ECOWAS expanded markedly to X tons, growing by 7.4% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 223% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lemon and lime imports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 95% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) were the key importers of lemons and limes in ECOWAS, together committing 61% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together making up a 34% share of total imports. Burkina Faso (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +73.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cabo Verde ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lemons and limes in ECOWAS, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Cabo Verde stood at +11.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+43.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+23.4% per year).
