Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, shipments abroad of machinery for solid-liquid separation increased by 12% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. Total exports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +13.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, solid-liquid separator exports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 68%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Mali (X units) was the main exporter of machinery for solid-liquid separation, committing 42% of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Senegal (X units), Guinea (X units), Niger (X units) and Nigeria (X units). All these countries together took approx. 44% share of total exports. Togo (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Mali was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machinery for solid-liquid separation exports, with a CAGR of +27.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+26.1%), Niger (+19.4%) and Guinea (+17.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Senegal (-4.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (-7.3%) and Nigeria (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mali (+37 p.p.), Guinea (+7.4 p.p.), Niger (+4.4 p.p.) and Togo (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Senegal, Nigeria and Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -9.5%, -13.4% and -18.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Mali ($X) remains the largest solid-liquid separator supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 9.9% share.

In Mali, solid-liquid separator exports increased at an average annual rate of +26.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+0.2% per year) and Senegal (-9.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per thousand units in 2022, which is down by -12.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 66%. The level of export peaked at $X per thousand units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per thousand units), while Niger ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, purchases abroad of machinery for solid-liquid separation decreased by -17.6% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 165% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, solid-liquid separator imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria prevails in imports structure, reaching X units, which was approx. 82% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X units), creating a 5.1% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Guinea (X units), Senegal (X units) and Niger (X units) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to solid-liquid separator imports into Nigeria stood at +8.2%. At the same time, Guinea (+12.9%), Niger (+10.3%), Senegal (+9.1%), Cote d'Ivoire (+7.7%) and Ghana (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +12.9% from 2012-2022. Nigeria (+4.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ghana saw its share reduced by -1.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for solid-liquid separation in ECOWAS, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with an 11% share.

In Nigeria, solid-liquid separator imports declined by an average annual rate of -2.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+3.7% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+9.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per thousand units, with an increase of 6.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 27%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per thousand units. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per thousand units), while Nigeria ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
