Mango And Mangosteen Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS mango and mangosteen market amounted to $X in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Mango And Mangosteen Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, mango and mangosteen production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 13%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Guinea (X tons), with a combined 76% share of total production. Cote d'Ivoire, Niger, Senegal and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +13.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average mango and mangosteen yield in ECOWAS dropped to X tons per ha, reducing by -2.3% on the year before. In general, the yield continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 4.9%. Over the period under review, the mango and mangosteen yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The mango and mangosteen harvested area amounted to X ha in 2022, flattening at the previous year's figure. The total harvested area indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mango and mangosteen harvested area decreased by -0.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the mango and mangosteen harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Mango And Mangosteen Exports

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, approx. X tons of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas were exported in ECOWAS; which is down by -25.4% against the year before. In general, exports, however, showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 72%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, mango and mangosteen exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 82% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire was the main exporter of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 45% of total exports in 2022. Senegal (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Mali (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 49% share of total exports. Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mango and mangosteen exports from Cote d'Ivoire stood at +9.6%. At the same time, Ghana (+22.9%), Mali (+15.2%) and Senegal (+10.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +22.9% from 2012-2022. Burkina Faso experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Mali (+8.2 p.p.), Ghana (+2.6 p.p.), Senegal (+2.4 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Burkina Faso saw its share reduced by -12.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest mango and mangosteen supplying countries in ECOWAS were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Mali ($X), with a combined 71% share of total exports. Ghana and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Among the main exporting countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +27.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+17.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Mango And Mangosteen Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, overseas purchases of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 1,049%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, mango and mangosteen imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 654% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Ghana prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 87% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), mixing up a 7.9% share of total imports. Benin (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mango and mangosteen imports into Ghana stood at +16.7%. At the same time, Benin (+52.7%) and Senegal (+29.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +52.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Ghana (+24 p.p.), Senegal (+5.8 p.p.) and Benin (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mangoes, mangosteens and guavas in ECOWAS, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 4.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Ghana amounted to +22.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Senegal (+18.8% per year) and Benin (+26.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -19.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 55% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
