Exports by Country

In 2021, Niger (X tons) represented the major exporter of matches, mixing up 57% of total exports. Nigeria (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Togo (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 42% share of total exports.

Exports from Niger increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+27.1%), Nigeria (+23.0%) and Togo (+14.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +27.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Niger (+26 p.p.), Nigeria (+19 p.p.), Senegal (+5.4 p.p.) and Togo (+4.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Ghana (-3.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Niger ($X) remains the largest matches supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 12% share.

In Niger, matches exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (+21.6% per year) and Ghana (-2.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 28%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In terms of the main importing countries, Benin, with a CAGR of +18.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 37%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
