Mate Market Size in ECOWAS
After three years of growth, the ECOWAS mate market decreased by -20.5% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, posted noticeable growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
Mate Production in ECOWAS
In value terms, mate production plummeted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 167% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then declined rapidly in the following year.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Ghana (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Gambia (X tons), together comprising 92% of total production. Mali, Niger and Cote d'Ivoire lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 8%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +27.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Mate Exports
Exports in ECOWAS
After three years of decline, overseas shipments of mate increased by 162% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 2,803% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mate exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 942%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 59% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), achieving a 38% share of total exports. Ghana (X kg) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +17.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest mate supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria amounted to +20.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+23.0% per year) and Ghana (-31.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -51.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 206% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Mate Imports
Imports in ECOWAS
In 2022, approx. X tons of mate were imported in ECOWAS; with an increase of 6% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 92% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, mate imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 77%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Burkina Faso (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) represented roughly 68% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), comprising a 19% share of total imports. Ghana (X kg), Senegal (X kg), Sierra Leone (X kg) and Niger (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +23.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 83% of total imports. Senegal, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 8.7%.
Among the main importing countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +17.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 8.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
