In value terms, mattocks and rakes production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 240%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, approx. X tons of mattocks, picks, hoes and rakes were exported in ECOWAS; rising by 134% compared with the previous year. In general, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, mattocks and rakes exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ghana dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 85% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), mixing up a 7.8% share of total exports. Mali (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to mattocks and rakes exports from Ghana stood at +11.4%. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+26.7%) and Mali (+24.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +26.7% from 2012-2022. Ghana (+8.5 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+5.9 p.p.) and Mali (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest mattocks and rakes supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burkina Faso ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana totaled +12.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burkina Faso (+39.8% per year) and Mali (+10.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, falling by -59.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 44%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Mattocks And Rakes Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, approx. X tons of mattocks, picks, hoes and rakes were imported in ECOWAS; surging by 4.3% compared with 2021. In general, imports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 58%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mattocks and rakes imports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 126%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ghana (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) represented the largest importers of mattocks, picks, hoes and rakes, together comprising 90% of total imports. Burkina Faso (X tons) and Togo (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +29.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Guinea ($X) and Senegal ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 78% share of total imports.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +44.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -4.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+11.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
