In 2021, overseas shipments of mattress supports were finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a sharp shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 263% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mattress support exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a precipitous curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 129% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units) were the major exporters of mattress supports in 2021, reaching near 33% and 30% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Togo (X units), Benin (X units), Senegal (X units) and Ghana (X units), together making up a 30% share of total exports. Sierra Leone (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +21.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) emerged as the largest mattress support supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 9.7% share.

In Burkina Faso, mattress support exports expanded at an average annual rate of +26.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+16.6% per year) and Nigeria (-48.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, rising by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 129% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

For the third year in a row, ECOWAS recorded growth in supplies from abroad of mattress supports, which increased by 40% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 78%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, mattress support imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Senegal (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Togo (X units) and Ghana (X units) represented roughly 73% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Guinea (X units), constituting a 9.7% share of total imports. The following importers - Gambia (X units) and Cabo Verde (X units) - each recorded an 8.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Gambia (with a CAGR of +31.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest mattress support importing markets in ECOWAS were Ghana ($X), Guinea ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 62% share of total imports. Gambia, Cabo Verde, Togo and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

Among the main importing countries, Gambia, with a CAGR of +34.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -11.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 39%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per unit), while Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
