From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +1.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average camel and other animal meat yield reached X tons per head in 2022, increasing by 9.9% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The level of yield peaked at X tons per head in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for camel and other animal meat production in ECOWAS; shrinking by -10% against the previous year. The total number of producing animals indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, number of animals slaughtered for camel and other animal meat production increased by +29.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the number of producing animals increased by 25%. As a result, the amount of animals produced reached the peak level of X heads, and then declined in the following year.

In 2022, overseas shipments of meat of camels and other animals increased by 97% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after four years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 12,880% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, camel and other animal meat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 9,151%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented roughly 100% of total exports in 2022.

Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the meat of camels and other animals exports, with a CAGR of +17.7% from 2012 to 2022. Cote d'Ivoire (+83 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) also remains the largest camel and other animal meat supplier in ECOWAS.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Cote d'Ivoire stood at +20.2%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed notable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 261%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Cote d'Ivoire.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Cote d'Ivoire amounted to +2.1% per year.

Imports in ECOWAS

Camel and other animal meat imports declined markedly to X tons in 2022, reducing by -38.3% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 183% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, camel and other animal meat imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 166%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Mali was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 42% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons), together mixing up a 49% share of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +72.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mali ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported meat of camels and other animals in ECOWAS, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Mali stood at +60.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+86.9% per year) and Nigeria (-9.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 34% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
