Melon Seed Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS melon seed market shrank to $X in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Melon Seed Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, melon seed production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 31%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Nigeria (X tons) remains the largest melon seed producing country in ECOWAS, accounting for 92% of total volume. Moreover, melon seed production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Mali (X tons), more than tenfold.

In Nigeria, melon seed production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022.

In 2022, the average yield of melon seed in ECOWAS fell slightly to X kg per ha, leveling off at the previous year's figure. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 17%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X kg per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the melon seed yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of melon seed production in ECOWAS stood at X ha, approximately mirroring the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 12%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the melon seed harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, overseas shipments of melon seed decreased by -23.8% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 138%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, melon seed exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 171%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

Ghana represented the key exporter of melon seed in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 75% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Togo (X tons), making up a 22% share of total exports. Nigeria (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +20.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+69.3%) and Nigeria (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +69.3% from 2012-2022. Togo (+21 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nigeria and Ghana saw its share reduced by -8.5% and -13.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest melon seed supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

In Ghana, melon seed exports increased at an average annual rate of +24.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Togo (+65.3% per year) and Nigeria (-5.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 13% against the previous year. Export price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, melon seed export price decreased by -25.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 79%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of melon seed, when their volume decreased by -9.7% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 203%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, melon seed imports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 81%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of melon seed imports in 2022 were Mali (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Niger (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together finishing at 91% of total import. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), achieving a 5.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +71.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Mali ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 76% of total imports. Burkina Faso, Ghana and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

Among the main importing countries, Niger, with a CAGR of +46.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 151% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+8.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
