In 2021, molluscs exports in ECOWAS skyrocketed to X tons, jumping by 75% on 2020 figures. Total exports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country
In 2021, Senegal (X tons) was the key exporter of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus), generating 71% of total exports. Ghana (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Gambia (9.2%) and Cote d'Ivoire (6%). Guinea (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
Exports from Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+29.3%), Gambia (+11.3%) and Guinea (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +29.3% from 2012-2021. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire, Gambia and Senegal increased by +5.1, +3.8 and +3.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest molluscs supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Gambia ($X), with a 9.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal stood at +8.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Gambia (+14.1% per year) and Ghana (-1.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 40% against the previous year. Export price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guinea (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS
In 2021, the amount of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) imported in ECOWAS skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 76% against the year before. In general, imports saw slight growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 577% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, molluscs imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 403%. Imports by Country
Cabo Verde (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) were the major importers of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) in 2021, accounting for near 36% and 29% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Mali (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together comprising a 28% share of total imports. Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +25.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest molluscs importing markets in ECOWAS were Cabo Verde ($X), Senegal ($X) and Mali ($X), together accounting for 84% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +16.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -3.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
