Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 64%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 120%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Ghana (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together generating 76% of total exports. Togo (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Senegal (X tons). All these countries together held near 13% share of total exports. The following exporters - Benin (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) - together made up 6.1% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Benin (with a CAGR of +18.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Senegal ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 75% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +10.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -26.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 99% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+16.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition) imported in ECOWAS surged to X tons, increasing by 19% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 855%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, motor vehicle engine imports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 737%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented the main importers of motor vehicle engines (spark-ignition), together mixing up 88% of total imports. The following importers - Mali (X tons) and Togo (X tons) - each reached an 8.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +36.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest motor vehicle engine importing markets in ECOWAS were Ghana ($X), Togo ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 70% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Nigeria and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

Among the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +18.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
