Newspaper Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS newspaper market contracted modestly to $X in 2022, reducing by -3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, newspaper production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, overseas shipments of newspapers, journals and periodicals increased by 23% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 225%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, newspaper exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 132%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria dominates exports structure, recording X units, which was near 90% of total exports in 2022. Togo (X units) and Ghana (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of newspapers, journals and periodicals. At the same time, Ghana (+10.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +10.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Togo (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+41 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest newspaper supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.

In Nigeria, newspaper exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (+13.0% per year) and Ghana (+16.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -4.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 32%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+22.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of newspapers, journals and periodicals, when their volume increased by 87% to X units. In general, imports, however, saw a deep setback. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of newspaper imports in 2022 were Niger (X units), Ghana (X units) and Gambia (X units), together reaching 75% of total import. Senegal (X units) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X units). All these countries together held near 11% share of total imports. The following importers - Benin (X units) and Liberia (X units) - together made up 6.6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +24.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Ghana ($X) and Gambia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 53% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Cote d'Ivoire, Niger, Benin and Liberia, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Liberia, with a CAGR of +19.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -35.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Niger (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gambia (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
