In 2021, shipments abroad of non-cellular polypropylene films, sheets, foil and strip decreased by -7.5% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -10.5% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 37%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-cellular polypropylene film exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Togo was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), achieving a 12% share of total exports. The following exporters - Senegal (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) - each reached a 5.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-cellular polypropylene film exports from Togo stood at +1.4%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+37.0%), Nigeria (+28.6%) and Senegal (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +37.0% from 2012-2021. While the share of Nigeria (+11 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Togo (-6.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Togo ($X) remains the largest non-cellular polypropylene film supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 1.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Togo amounted to +1.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+39.8% per year) and Senegal (-4.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 48% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, non-cellular polypropylene film imports in ECOWAS contracted rapidly to X tons, dropping by -23% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 136%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then plummeted in the following year.

In value terms, non-cellular polypropylene film imports shrank to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 122%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nigeria prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 61% of total imports in 2021. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 9.8% share, followed by Ghana (9.2%), Togo (7.5%) and Senegal (7.1%). The following importers - Mali (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.9% share of total imports.

Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of non-cellular polypropylene films, sheets, foil and strip. At the same time, Guinea (+18.5%), Ghana (+16.9%), Mali (+12.5%), Senegal (+5.6%), Togo (+4.8%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +18.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of Ghana (+6.6 p.p.), Senegal (+2.1 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+1.9 p.p.) and Togo (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Nigeria (-15 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-cellular polypropylene films, sheets, foil and strip in ECOWAS, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria totaled +2.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+1.9% per year) and Ghana (+16.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 18%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
