Exports in ECOWAS
In 2022, shipments abroad of non-refractory clay roofing tiles increased by 8.8% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 128%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, non-refractory clay roofing tiles exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 84% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) was the major exporter of non-refractory clay roofing tiles, achieving 45% of total exports. Benin (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Ghana (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 52% share of total exports. Burkina Faso (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +17.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Benin (+30.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +30.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-5.0%), Burkina Faso (-19.2%), Ghana (-20.7%) and Togo (-23.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+43 p.p.), Benin (+19 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+10 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Burkina Faso (-1.9 p.p.), Ghana (-6.5 p.p.) and Togo (-25.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest non-refractory clay roofing tiles supplying countries in ECOWAS were Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Togo ($X), together accounting for 89% of total exports. Ghana, Benin and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.
Among the main exporting countries, Benin, with a CAGR of +17.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -3.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, non-refractory clay roofing tiles export price decreased by -16.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 56%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+11.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of non-refractory clay roofing tiles, when their volume decreased by -14.7% to X tons. In general, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 95%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, non-refractory clay roofing tiles imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 103% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Guinea-Bissau (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Mali (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented the largest importers of non-refractory clay roofing tiles, together committing 90% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +17.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-refractory clay roofing tiles in ECOWAS, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guinea-Bissau ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Cabo Verde, with an 8.2% share.
In Nigeria, non-refractory clay roofing tiles imports increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Guinea-Bissau (+13.7% per year) and Cabo Verde (+6.7% per year).

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 25%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
