Onion And Shallot Market Size in ECOWAS

In 2022, the ECOWAS onion and shallot market decreased by -0.2% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by +0.4% against 2017 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Onion And Shallot Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, onion and shallot production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Mali (X tons), with a combined 85% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +8.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average onion and shallot yield reached X tons per ha in 2022, almost unchanged from 2021. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 25%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of onions and shallots in ECOWAS declined modestly to X ha, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. The total harvested area indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, onion and shallot harvested area increased by +54.7% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, approx. X tons of onions and shallots were exported in ECOWAS; which is down by -32.1% against 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 102%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, onion and shallot exports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 126%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Niger (X tons) was the largest exporter of onions and shallots, committing 75% of total exports. Senegal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Burkina Faso (9.3%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to onion and shallot exports from Niger stood at +1.6%. At the same time, Senegal (+22.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +22.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+9.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Niger (-1.8 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (-9.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Niger ($X) and Burkina Faso ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 96% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +23.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, onion and shallot export price increased by +66.3% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 15%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of onions and shallots, when their volume decreased by -5.5% to X tons. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, onion and shallot imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Sierra Leone (X tons) represented the major importers of onions and shallots, together mixing up 92% of total imports. Liberia (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +30.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest onion and shallot importing markets in ECOWAS were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Guinea ($X) and Senegal ($X), together accounting for 66% of total imports. Mali, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

Among the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +31.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -5.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Liberia ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
