Exports in ECOWAS
In 2022, optical fiber cables exports in ECOWAS surged to X tons, increasing by 147% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 291% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, optical fiber cables exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 274%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 62% of total exports in 2022. Gambia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 9.1% share, followed by Senegal (8.3%) and Nigeria (5.7%). Guinea (X kg), Ghana (X kg) and Togo (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Cote d'Ivoire increased at an average annual rate of +50.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+63.8%), Gambia (+11.4%), Senegal (+10.5%) and Guinea (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +63.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ghana (-24.1%) and Nigeria (-26.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cote d'Ivoire (+62 p.p.), Gambia (+7.7 p.p.), Senegal (+6.8 p.p.), Guinea (+3.3 p.p.) and Togo (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -25.4% and -53.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) emerged as the largest optical fiber cables supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with an 8.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 7.4% share.
In Cote d'Ivoire, optical fiber cables exports increased at an average annual rate of +33.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+14.3% per year) and Nigeria (-27.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the export price saw a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 129% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS
In 2022, approx. X tons of optical fiber cables were imported in ECOWAS; growing by 16% on 2021 figures. In general, imports recorded a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, optical fiber cables imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) represented the main importer of optical fiber cables, mixing up 36% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Togo (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons), together comprising a 55% share of total imports.
Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +31.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+52.6%), Togo (+51.1%), Senegal (+21.6%), Niger (+16.5%) and Ghana (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +52.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-16.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+33 p.p.), Senegal (+9.9 p.p.), Togo (+8.6 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+5.9 p.p.), Niger (+5.5 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-68.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported optical fiber cables in ECOWAS, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria amounted to +3.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (-13.3% per year) and Senegal (+22.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, growing by 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 82%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
