Orange Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS orange market rose to $X in 2022, with an increase of 3.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a mild shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Orange Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, orange production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 57%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Ghana (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Guinea (X tons), together comprising 89% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Guinea (with a CAGR of +49.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of oranges in ECOWAS reduced modestly to X tons per ha, approximately mirroring 2021 figures. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, the orange yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The orange harvested area fell modestly to X ha in 2022, leveling off at 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to orange production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, the amount of oranges exported in ECOWAS dropped slightly to X tons, declining by -3.6% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate measured growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 391%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, orange exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 236% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ghana represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mali (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together achieving a 23% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+15.2%) and Mali (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +15.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+32 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -26.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest orange supplying countries in ECOWAS were Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Mali ($X), together comprising 93% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +5.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -19.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+16.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of oranges, when their volume decreased by -3.6% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 57%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, orange imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Burkina Faso (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) represented the major importer of oranges in ECOWAS, constituting 84% of total import. Mali (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.9% share, followed by Niger (4.5%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +63.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cabo Verde ($X), Senegal ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 83% share of total imports. Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.7%.

Niger, with a CAGR of +69.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 5.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 23% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
