In 2021, overseas shipments of organic surface active agents decreased by -73.9% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 210% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then plummeted in the following year.

In value terms, organic surface active agent exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 64%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Senegal was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 45% of total exports. Niger (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (13%) and Nigeria (13%). Togo (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +37.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) emerged as the largest organic surface active agent supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Niger, with a 15% share.

In Senegal, organic surface active agent exports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (-1.1% per year) and Niger (+27.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 99% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

For the third year in a row, ECOWAS recorded growth in overseas purchases of organic surface active agents, which increased by 36% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +90.2% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, organic surface active agent imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +73.0% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Burkina Faso (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) represented roughly 90% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Senegal (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) - together made up 4.4% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +38.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 77% of total imports. Burkina Faso, Senegal and Cabo Verde lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.

Among the main importing countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +31.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight descent. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
