In 2021, shipments abroad of organo-inorganic compounds (excluding organo-sulphur compounds) increased by 119% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, organo-inorganic compounds exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 780%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented the major exporter of organo-inorganic compounds (excluding organo-sulphur compounds), making up 76% of total exports. Senegal (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mali (7%).

Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the organo-inorganic compounds (excluding organo-sulphur compounds) exports, with a CAGR of +14.9% from 2012 to 2021. Mali (-12.7%) and Senegal (-18.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+62 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Mali (-7.7 p.p.) and Senegal (-43.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest organo-inorganic compounds supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Cote d'Ivoire amounted to +17.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (-17.2% per year) and Mali (-27.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -37% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 332%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, overseas purchases of organo-inorganic compounds (excluding organo-sulphur compounds) increased by 8.2% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, imports posted a measured increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 154%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, organo-inorganic compounds imports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 117% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the largest importer of organo-inorganic compounds (excluding organo-sulphur compounds) in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 51% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together mixing up a 43% share of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to organo-inorganic compounds imports into Nigeria stood at +3.2%. At the same time, Senegal (+47.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+13.7%) and Cabo Verde (+8.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +47.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+12 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.2 p.p.) and Senegal (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Ghana (-12.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported organo-inorganic compounds (excluding organo-sulphur compounds) in ECOWAS, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 21% share.

In Nigeria, organo-inorganic compounds imports shrank by an average annual rate of -9.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (-4.9% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+12.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -25.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 16%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Cabo Verde ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
