Other Cereals Market Size in ECOWAS

After two years of growth, the ECOWAS other cereals market decreased by -9.8% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Other Cereals Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, other cereals production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +116.6% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Guinea (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of other cereals production, accounting for 74% of total volume. Moreover, other cereals production in Guinea exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Nigeria (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Mali (X tons), with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in Guinea amounted to +2.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+0.3% per year) and Mali (+10.3% per year).

In 2021, the average other cereals yield in ECOWAS contracted to X kg per ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2020 figures. In general, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 5.2% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the harvested area of other cerealses in ECOWAS dropped to X ha, which is down by -2.4% against 2020. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to other cereals production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, overseas shipments of other cerealses decreased by -70.2% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 349% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, other cereals exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 282% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) were the main exporters of other cerealses in ECOWAS, together making up 58% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), Togo (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together achieving a 39% share of total exports. Guinea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Nigeria (with a CAGR of +119.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) emerged as the largest other cereals supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 5.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria amounted to +162.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+37.1% per year) and Senegal (+25.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 613% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a significant increase. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+19.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS

Other cereals imports fell markedly to X tons in 2021, dropping by -94.9% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 1,158% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, other cereals imports fell markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 1,746% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nigeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) represented roughly 63% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Niger (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Gambia (X tons), together comprising a 30% share of total imports. Burkina Faso (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +209.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest other cereals importing markets in ECOWAS were Ghana ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Nigeria ($X), together comprising 91% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +239.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 37% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 136%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
