Exports in ECOWAS
In 2021, after seven years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of passenger cars, when their volume increased by 20% to X units. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, passenger car exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 60% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Senegal (X units), distantly followed by Togo (X units), Nigeria (X units), Niger (X units), Benin (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Burkina Faso (X units) and Ghana (X units) were the largest exporters of passenger cars, together making up 87% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +8.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Senegal ($X), Togo ($X) and Niger ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 53% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Niger, with a CAGR of +11.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per unit), while Benin ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+8.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Passenger Car Imports
Imports in ECOWAS
In 2021, supplies from abroad of passenger cars increased by 9.6% to X units, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports recorded a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, passenger car imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Ghana (X units) was the major importer of passenger cars, constituting 34% of total imports. Nigeria (X units) held an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Guinea (16%), Cote d'Ivoire (8.5%), Mali (4.8%) and Sierra Leone (4.8%). Liberia (X units) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Guinea (with a CAGR of +30.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported passenger cars in ECOWAS, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria stood at -7.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+3.5% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+16.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -23.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 126%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Guinea ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
