In value terms, drawing chalk exports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 1,534%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Nigeria (X units) was the largest exporter of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks, committing 49% of total exports. Togo (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 24% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (9.4%), Senegal (7.3%) and Niger (6.9%). Sierra Leone (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +20.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest drawing chalk supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with a 6.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria amounted to +15.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (+1.9% per year) and Senegal (-27.8% per year).

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Togo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Overall, imports recorded prominent growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, drawing chalk imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 221% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X units), Togo (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) was the main importer of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks in ECOWAS, creating 57% of total import. Guinea (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Burkina Faso (9.1%), Benin (8.7%) and Mali (5.7%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Ghana (with a CAGR of +36.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Togo ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Guinea ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 52% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Guinea, with a CAGR of +23.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, waning by -10.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 240%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per unit), while Burkina Faso ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
