Pears And Quinces Production in ECOWAS

Benin (X tons) remains the largest pears and quinces producing country in ECOWAS, accounting for 76% of total volume. Moreover, pears and quinces production in Benin exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Guinea (X tons), threefold.

In 2022, overseas shipments of pears and quinces increased by 182% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 6,605% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pears and quinces exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 15,073%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Nigeria represented the main exporter of pears and quinces in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 69% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), constituting a 26% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pears and quinces exports, with a CAGR of +6.9% from 2012 to 2022. Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Cote d'Ivoire (-4.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of -0.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -39.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 126% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, approx. X tons of pears and quinces were imported in ECOWAS; jumping by 41% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. Nigeria, with a CAGR of +23.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -9.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern.
