Exports in ECOWAS

In 2021, exports of pencils and crayons with leads encased in a rigid sheath in ECOWAS skyrocketed to X units, growing by 245% against the year before. In general, exports posted prominent growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, encased lead pencil exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a moderate increase. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Burkina Faso was the major exporter of pencils and crayons with leads encased in a rigid sheath in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports recording X units, which was near 49% of total exports in 2021. Nigeria (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 26% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (17%) and Senegal (6.4%).

In Burkina Faso, encased lead pencil exports increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+59.0% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-19.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -24.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 86%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, imports of pencils and crayons with leads encased in a rigid sheath in ECOWAS skyrocketed to X units, growing by 132% against the year before. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, encased lead pencil imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X units) was the key importer of pencils and crayons with leads encased in a rigid sheath, committing 51% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Togo (X units), together mixing up a 36% share of total imports. Sierra Leone (X units), Liberia (X units) and Guinea (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -3.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+34.2%), Cote d'Ivoire (+31.4%), Guinea (+22.3%), Liberia (+21.7%), Togo (+9.0%) and Ghana (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sierra Leone emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +34.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Ghana (+7.5 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+7.1 p.p.), Togo (+3.5 p.p.), Sierra Leone (+2.8 p.p.), Liberia (+1.9 p.p.) and Guinea (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Nigeria (-20.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 72% share of total imports. Togo, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

Among the main importing countries, Sierra Leone, with a CAGR of +36.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, declining by -22.6% against the previous year. Import price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
