The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of personal weighing machines, when their volume increased by 60% to X units. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 90% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, personal weighing machine exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 164%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ghana was the largest exporting country with an export of about X units, which reached 51% of total exports. Niger (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), Senegal (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Togo (X units). All these countries together held approx. 45% share of total exports. Liberia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Ghana decreased at an average annual rate of -3.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Liberia (+23.1%), Nigeria (+19.9%), Niger (+19.2%), Cote d'Ivoire (+12.4%) and Togo (+7.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Liberia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +23.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Senegal (-17.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Niger (+15 p.p.), Nigeria (+6.9 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+5.4 p.p.), Togo (+3.5 p.p.) and Liberia (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana and Senegal saw its share reduced by -3.4% and -30.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest personal weighing machine supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Niger ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana amounted to -6.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Niger (+18.5% per year) and Togo (+19.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -6.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 39%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per unit), while Liberia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+11.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of personal weighing machines decreased by -26.1% to X units, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 98% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, personal weighing machine imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 119% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ghana (X units) represented the key importer of personal weighing machines, comprising 34% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) held a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (16%), Nigeria (14%) and Guinea (4.9%). The following importers - Mali (X units) and Niger (X units) - together made up 5.7% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +34.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Senegal ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 69% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Senegal, with a CAGR of +31.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, rising by 3.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 19%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per unit), while Guinea ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
