The ECOWAS photographic film market stood at $X in 2021, flattening at the previous year. In general, consumption showed a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Photographic film exports contracted sharply to X square meters in 2021, dropping by -42.4% compared with the year before. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 458%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X square meters. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, photographic film exports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 95%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Mali (X square meters) represented the key exporter of photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed, constituting 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X square meters) and Ghana (X square meters), together committing an 18% share of total exports. Togo (X square meters) took a little share of total exports.

Mali was also the fastest-growing in terms of the photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed exports, with a CAGR of +17.9% from 2012 to 2021. Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Ghana (-11.7%) and Togo (-25.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mali increased by +59 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest photographic film supplying countries in ECOWAS were Mali ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Ghana ($X), together comprising 88% of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +26.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per square meter in 2021, surging by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 581% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per square meter), while Mali ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+27.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Photographic Film Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, supplies from abroad of photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed decreased by -12.2% to X square meters, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 180% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X square meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, photographic film imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 102%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the major importer of photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports recording X square meters, which was approx. 53% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X square meters), Cote d'Ivoire (X square meters) and Senegal (X square meters), together making up a 33% share of total imports. The following importers - Guinea (X square meters), Mali (X square meters) and Benin (X square meters) - together made up 7.8% of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -7.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+25.1%) and Guinea (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +25.1% from 2012-2021. Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Senegal (-2.0%), Ghana (-4.3%) and Benin (-21.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+5 p.p.), Senegal (+2.9 p.p.), Ghana (+2.3 p.p.), Guinea (+2.2 p.p.) and Mali (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Nigeria (-5.6 p.p.) and Benin (-8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest photographic film importing markets in ECOWAS were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 59% share of total imports. Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Benin lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +31.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per square meter, increasing by 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price posted a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 103%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per square meter), while Nigeria ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
