The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 554% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pigments, opacifiers and colours exports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 140% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Togo (X tons) represented the major exporter of pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass, achieving 69% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X kg), constituting a 31% share of total exports.

Togo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass exports, with a CAGR of +14.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+14.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Togo (+62 p.p.) and Nigeria (+27 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 250%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Togo stood at $X per ton.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, supplies from abroad of pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass decreased by -25.6% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 234% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pigments, opacifiers and colours imports fell notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 148%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the main importer of pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 81% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), generating a 17% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pigments, opacifiers and colours imports into Nigeria stood at +12.5%. At the same time, Ghana (+49.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +49.6% from 2012-2022. Ghana (+16 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Nigeria saw its share reduced by -12.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pigments, opacifiers and colours for ceramics, enamelling or glass in ECOWAS, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 29% share of total imports.
