Pineapple Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS pineapple market totaled $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Pineapple Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, pineapple production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The country with the largest volume of pineapple production was Nigeria (X tons), accounting for 57% of total volume. Moreover, pineapple production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Ghana (X tons), twofold. Benin (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Nigeria was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Ghana (+1.1% per year) and Benin (-1.2% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of pineapples in ECOWAS fell to X tons per ha, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the yield increased by 3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the pineapple yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The pineapple harvested area shrank slightly to X ha in 2022, flattening at the year before. In general, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 1.7%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the pineapple harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Pineapple Exports

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, the amount of pineapples exported in ECOWAS shrank to X tons, which is down by -8.1% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, exports showed a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pineapple exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), constituting a 30% share of total exports. Benin (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of pineapples. Benin (-7.4%) and Ghana (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cote d'Ivoire (+16 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana saw its share reduced by -16.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Benin ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 98% of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +5.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 26%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Pineapple Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, imports of pineapples in ECOWAS skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 92% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 152%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pineapple imports declined markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Togo represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 77% of total imports. Burkina Faso (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Cabo Verde (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 22% share of total imports.

Togo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pineapples imports, with a CAGR of +173.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+63.1%) and Cabo Verde (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Togo and Burkina Faso increased by +77 and +14 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Cabo Verde ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pineapples in ECOWAS, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 28% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Cabo Verde stood at +3.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Togo (-13.1% per year) and Burkina Faso (+49.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -71.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 48% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
