Piper Pepper Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS piper pepper market reached $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a prominent increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Burkina Faso (X tons) remains the largest piper pepper producing country in ECOWAS, accounting for 93% of total volume. Moreover, piper pepper production in Burkina Faso exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Ghana (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Burkina Faso stood at +15.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+0.7% per year) and Niger (-1.2% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of piper pepper in ECOWAS dropped to X kg per ha, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the piper pepper yield attained the peak level at X kg per ha in 2021, and then declined in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of piper pepper were harvested in ECOWAS; shrinking by -2.9% compared with the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 118%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the piper pepper harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, approx. X tons of piper pepper were exported in ECOWAS; surging by 114% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports recorded a strong increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, piper pepper exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 77% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 77% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together mixing up a 20% share of total exports. Niger (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the piper pepper exports, with a CAGR of +43.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+15.1%) and Senegal (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Ghana (-2.9%) and Niger (-13.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+70 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Senegal (-3 p.p.), Niger (-28.2 p.p.) and Ghana (-33.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest piper pepper supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria totaled +23.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+30.8% per year) and Senegal (+9.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, declining by -49% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+13.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Piper Pepper Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, purchases abroad of piper pepper was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 78%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, piper pepper imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 42% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Togo (X tons), together achieving a 45% share of total imports. The following importers - Mali (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) - together made up 7.9% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of +39.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported piper pepper in ECOWAS, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria totaled +28.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Senegal (+6.6% per year) and Ghana (+17.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
