Pistachio Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS pistachio market was estimated at $X in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. The total consumption indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +22.2% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Pistachio Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, pistachio production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 32%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of pistachio production was Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), comprising approx. 53% of total volume. Moreover, pistachio production in Cote d'Ivoire exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Benin (X tons), threefold. Nigeria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Cote d'Ivoire amounted to +2.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Benin (+35.9% per year) and Nigeria (+2.0% per year).

Pistachio Exports

Exports in ECOWAS

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of pistachios decreased by -80.7% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 477%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, pistachio exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 273% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Benin represented the main exporter of pistachios in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 64% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Togo (X tons), together generating a 34% share of total exports.

Benin was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pistachios exports, with a CAGR of +39.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+16.2%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Benin (+64 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Togo (-3.8 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-57.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Togo ($X) and Benin ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 95% of total exports.

Togo, with a CAGR of +31.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 54% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 300%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+13.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Pistachio Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, approx. X tons of pistachios were imported in ECOWAS; increasing by 4.8% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports posted a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 233% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pistachio imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a tangible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Mali (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together constituting 73% of total imports. Cabo Verde (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 13% share of total imports. Liberia (X kg), Benin (X kg) and Ghana (X kg) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +106.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pistachio importing markets in ECOWAS were Mali ($X), Senegal ($X) and Cabo Verde ($X), with a combined 65% share of total imports.

Mali, with a CAGR of +83.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -19.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, enjoyed a temperate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 154% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.
