In 2022, approx. X tons of plantains were imported in ECOWAS; which is down by X% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by X,307% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plantain imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by X,972% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Senegal was the key importer of plantains in ECOWAS, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2022. Burkina Faso (X tons) held a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Niger (X%). Mali (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2013 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to plantain imports into Senegal stood at X%. At the same time, Mali (X%), Nigeria (X%), Niger (X%) and Burkina Faso (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of X% from 2013-2022.
