In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of plastic baths, shower-baths, sinks and wash-basins, when their volume increased by 69% to X units. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 620%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic bath or sink exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 448% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 77% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X units), achieving a 9.3% share of total exports. Senegal (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Togo (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the plastic baths, shower-baths, sinks and wash-basins exports, with a CAGR of +51.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+12.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Senegal (-7.2%), Nigeria (-24.1%) and Ghana (-27.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cote d'Ivoire (+77 p.p.) and Togo (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Nigeria and Ghana saw its share reduced by -16% and -66.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest plastic bath or sink supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Cote d'Ivoire stood at +47.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (-3.7% per year) and Ghana (-31.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in ECOWAS

For the third consecutive year, ECOWAS recorded growth in overseas purchases of plastic baths, shower-baths, sinks and wash-basins, which increased by 108% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a buoyant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, plastic bath or sink imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 87%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Nigeria prevails in imports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 79% of total imports in 2022. Ghana (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X units). All these countries together held near 11% share of total imports. The following importers - Guinea (X units) and Benin (X units) - each accounted for a 3.7% share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the plastic baths, shower-baths, sinks and wash-basins imports, with a CAGR of +26.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Benin (+15.6%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+12.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Guinea (-5.0%) and Ghana (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Nigeria increased by +50 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported plastic baths, shower-baths, sinks and wash-basins in ECOWAS, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 14% share.

In Nigeria, plastic bath or sink imports expanded at an average annual rate of +20.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+8.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+17.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2022, which is down by -37.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 25%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+14.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
