In 2021, shipments abroad of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip increased by 105% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a sharp shrinkage. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-cellular polyethylene film exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Senegal (X tons) represented the key exporter of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip, comprising 56% of total exports. Nigeria (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Togo (X tons). All these countries together held near 35% share of total exports. Benin (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Mali (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip exports, with a CAGR of +65.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Benin (+9.9%) and Ghana (+5.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Togo (-15.4%), Mali (-19.9%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-37.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+56 p.p.), Nigeria (+13 p.p.), Benin (+3.9 p.p.), Togo (+3.6 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -79.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) emerged as the largest non-cellular polyethylene film supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 6.2% share.

In Senegal, non-cellular polyethylene film exports increased at an average annual rate of +55.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (+3.9% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-38.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Export price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 71% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Benin (+14.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, imports of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip in ECOWAS declined to X tons, which is down by -14.6% compared with the year before. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +21.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, non-cellular polyethylene film imports reduced to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +43.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 56%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) were the key importers of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip, together achieving 88% of total imports. Mali (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +14.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip in ECOWAS, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 14% share.

In Ghana, non-cellular polyethylene film imports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nigeria (-4.4% per year) and Burkina Faso (+6.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Mali ($X per ton) and Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) and Burkina Faso ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
