Pork Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS pork market declined modestly to $X in 2022, reducing by -2% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Pork Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, pork production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 33%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Burkina Faso (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), with a combined 88% share of total production. Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Togo and Cote d'Ivoire lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7.7%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +5.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average pork yield reduced to X kg per head in 2022, approximately equating the year before. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the yield increased by 1.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the pork yield reached the maximum level at X kg per head in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the number of animals slaughtered for pork production in ECOWAS shrank modestly to X heads, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. This number increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the number of producing animals increased by 3.7%. Over the period under review, this number reached the peak level at X heads in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Exports in ECOWAS

Pork exports shrank remarkably to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -41.6% against 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 224%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pork exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports faced a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 152%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Senegal (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) were the key exporters of pork in 2022, recording approx. 42% and 41% of total exports, respectively. Burkina Faso (X tons) held a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Cabo Verde (6.5%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +13.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) emerged as the largest pork supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 16% share.

In Cote d'Ivoire, pork exports decreased by an average annual rate of -5.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+4.3% per year) and Burkina Faso (-11.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Pork Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of pork decreased by -12.7% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 49%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, pork imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 53% of total imports. Liberia (X tons) held a 32% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (8.3%). Cabo Verde (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ghana (with a CAGR of +18.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Liberia ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 79% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +17.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (-1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
