The ECOWAS potato starch market dropped dramatically to $X in 2021, waning by -15.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a buoyant increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In 2021, the amount of potato starch exported in ECOWAS contracted remarkably to X tons, falling by -33.3% on 2020. Over the period under review, exports saw a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 241% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, potato starch exports declined remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, posted notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 208%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Niger (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented the key exporters of potato starch in ECOWAS, together generating 84% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), comprising a 12% share of total exports. Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +70.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Niger ($X), Senegal ($X) and Nigeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 96% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +98.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 83%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+34.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in ECOWAS
In 2021, the amount of potato starch imported in ECOWAS surged to X tons, increasing by 157% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 411%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, potato starch imports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 1,476%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Nigeria prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 87% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), comprising an 8.9% share of total imports.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the potato starch imports, with a CAGR of +44.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+18.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria (+41 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Senegal saw its share reduced by -19% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported potato starch in ECOWAS, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports.
In Nigeria, potato starch imports increased at an average annual rate of +54.6% over the period from 2012-2021.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -55.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 208%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Senegal amounted to $X per ton.
