Poultry Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS poultry market fell to $X in 2022, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded tangible growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Poultry Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, poultry production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by X%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), with a combined X% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average poultry yield shrank slightly to X kg per X heads in 2022, approximately mirroring 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, number of animals slaughtered for poultry production in ECOWAS contracted slightly to X heads, remaining stable against the year before. This number increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the number of producing animals increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, this number attained the peak level at X heads in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports in ECOWAS

In 2022, shipments abroad of poultry decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, poultry exports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a dramatic decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Liberia (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) were the major exporters of poultry in ECOWAS, together amounting to approx. X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Togo (X tons) and Guinea (X tons), together achieving a X% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Benin (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by X%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Poultry Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

After five years of growth, purchases abroad of poultry decreased by X% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, poultry imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

Ghana represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at X% of total imports. Benin (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Guinea (X%), Liberia (X%) and Sierra Leone (X%). The following importers - Gambia (X tons) and Togo (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to poultry imports into Ghana stood at X%. At the same time, Guinea (X%), Gambia (X%), Liberia (X%), Sierra Leone (X%) and Togo (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Benin (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (X p.p.), Guinea (X p.p.), Liberia (X p.p.) and Gambia (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Benin saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported poultry in ECOWAS, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Benin ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Guinea, with a X% share.

In Ghana, poultry imports increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Benin (X% per year) and Guinea (X% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by X% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible decline.
