Preserved Asparagus Market Size in ECOWAS

The ECOWAS preserved asparagus market amounted to $X in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Preserved Asparagus Production in ECOWAS

In value terms, preserved asparagus production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw mild growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in ECOWAS

After five years of decline, overseas shipments of preserved asparagus increased by 3.6% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved asparagus exports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Ghana (X tons) represented roughly 100% of total exports in 2022.

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the preserved asparagus exports, with a CAGR of -15.5% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) also remains the largest preserved asparagus supplier in ECOWAS.

In Ghana, preserved asparagus exports contracted by an average annual rate of -16.5% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Ghana.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Ghana amounted to -1.1% per year.

Preserved Asparagus Imports

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2022, overseas purchases of preserved asparagus were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 85%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved asparagus imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 52%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Senegal (X tons) was the main importer of preserved asparagus, making up 46% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Cabo Verde (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Liberia (X tons), together creating a 37% share of total imports. The following importers - Togo (X kg) and Niger (X kg) - each finished at an 8.1% share of total imports.

Imports into Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +30.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+36.2%), Liberia (+30.3%) and Burkina Faso (+12.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +36.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Ghana (-1.3%), Nigeria (-8.5%), Niger (-9.4%) and Cabo Verde (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+42 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+5.2 p.p.), Liberia (+4.3 p.p.) and Togo (+4.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Niger (-7.1 p.p.), Nigeria (-12.3 p.p.) and Cabo Verde (-23.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Cabo Verde ($X) and Nigeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 52% of total imports. Togo, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Niger and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Togo, with a CAGR of +38.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 47%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+7.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
