In 2021, the amount of printers, copying machines and facsimile machines exported in ECOWAS contracted markedly to X units, dropping by -49.6% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 65%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, printers and copying machines exports fell markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 66% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Liberia (X units) represented the main exporter of printers, copying machines and facsimile machines, generating 34% of total exports. Togo (X units) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mali (12%), Ghana (9.6%), Senegal (8%), Cote d'Ivoire (7.9%) and Benin (5.8%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to printers and copying machines exports from Liberia stood at +27.0%. At the same time, Benin (+59.1%) and Togo (+38.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +59.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mali (-7.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (-15.4%), Ghana (-17.8%) and Senegal (-19.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Liberia (+32 p.p.), Togo (+14 p.p.), Benin (+5.7 p.p.) and Mali (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana and Senegal saw its share reduced by -6.9%, -13.8% and -15.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Liberia ($X) remains the largest printers and copying machines supplier in ECOWAS, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mali ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 6.5% share.

In Liberia, printers and copying machines exports increased at an average annual rate of +49.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mali (-13.0% per year) and Senegal (-13.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per unit, surging by 49% against the previous year. Export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, printers and copying machines export price increased by +84.3% against 2017 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Liberia ($X per unit), while Togo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Liberia (+17.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of printers, copying machines and facsimile machines was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, printers and copying machines imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X units) represented the major importer of printers, copying machines and facsimile machines, committing 48% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Senegal (X units) and Ghana (X units). All these countries together took approx. 36% share of total imports. The following importers - Mali (X units), Togo (X units), Niger (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units) - together made up 11% of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -4.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+18.7%), Niger (+16.1%), Cote d'Ivoire (+15.4%), Togo (+14.0%) and Senegal (+7.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +18.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-3.5%) and Burkina Faso (-9.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Mali and Togo increased by +14, +4.1, +3.6 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Senegal ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 68% of total imports. Ghana, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Niger, with a CAGR of +21.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
