Imports in ECOWAS

In 2021, the amount of propene (propylene) imported in ECOWAS soared to X tons, rising by 144% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 145% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, propene imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, faced a deep slump. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 60% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mali (X tons), comprising a 38% share of total imports. Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of +13.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Mali ($X) and Ghana ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 88% of total imports.

Ghana, with a CAGR of +3.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -12.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price faced a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (-2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
