In 2022, Ghana (X kg) represented the key exporter of pulp from fibres other than wood in ECOWAS, committing 100% of total export.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of pulp from fibres other than wood increased by 2.7% to X tons, rising for the eighth consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 189%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, imports of pulp from fibres other than wood shrank notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 199%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Nigeria was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 61% of total imports. Guinea (X tons) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Togo (16%). Gambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +38.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Guinea (+42.5%) and Gambia (+14.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +42.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Togo (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+51 p.p.) and Guinea (+21 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Togo (-68.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pulp from fibres other than wood in ECOWAS, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guinea ($X), with a 6.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Gambia, with a 2.6% share.
In Nigeria, imports of pulp from fibres other than wood expanded at an average annual rate of +34.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Guinea (+39.4% per year) and Gambia (+44.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -21.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 81% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
